    President Obama publicly declared his administration’s opposition to the controversial Internet censorship bill Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) which is still active. After a continuous loss of support and facing severe opposition, and threatened protest from the public, the House has shelved the bill.


The bill however, has not been killed completely, it has been "shelved indefinitely". Meaning the sponsors of the bill will revisit it and make changes to bring it up at a later date.



House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) “While I remain concerned about Senate action on the Protect IP Act, I am confident that flawed legislation will not be taken up by this House. Majority Leader [Eric] Cantor has assured me that we will continue to work to address outstanding concerns and work to build consensus prior to any anti-piracy legislation coming before the House for a vote.”

Opposition of both bills came from all sides of the political spectrum, including internet giants. November 15, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, eBay, Mozilla, Yahoo, AOL, and LinkedIn wrote a letter to key members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, saying SOPA poses “a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job creation, as well as to our nation’s cybersecurity.” Yahoo has reportedly quit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce over the organization’s enthusiastic support for SOPA.



The bill threatened to put people in prison for posting copyrighted material, for example, or wiping out entire web sites that featured what could be considered copyrighted material.

The final blow to kill the bills came when President Obama's technology advisers expressed severe concerns about the bill and the effect it would have on free expression. Obama vowed to veto the bill in any form if it made it to his desk. One of SOPA’s sponsors, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), removed the provision that would have required ISPs to block any offending web sites, but it was too late after the Administration's announcement.

However, PIPA continues in the Senate, Obama has also vowed to veto it if it passes, which is considered unlikely. Reminds me of when Obama promised not to sign NDAA, until the very last moment then signing it and promising not to use its full power.

First rule to live by never trust government. When you do they try to enact policies that they think are best for you. We all know the kind of puppets that sit in Washington, D.C. Be cautious and vigilant, keep the RevolUTION going. We need to keep the pressure and spotlight on the government as long as it exists in its form to not lose anymore liberties.
